Willie Stargell Foundation provides $100,000 in grants including monies to NHRMC and two local learning institutions.
WILMINGTON, NC – The Willie Stargell Foundation has announced that it will be providing $100,000 in grants which include a $30,000 grant to the New Hanover Regional Medical Center Foundation in support of continued dialysis care for those battling kidney disease. The annual check presentation would have occurred in the Willie “Pops” Stargell Dialysis Unit at NHRMC, but due to COVID-19 and the current social distancing restrictions in place, all grants will be announced virtually.
The grant will support the purchase of equipment for dialysis and for hospitalized patient care. The dialysis machine will be used to provide hemodialysis treatments in the Willie Stargell Dialysis Center. Other equipment including handheld pulse oximeters, dopplers and horizontal quad pump carriers will benefit all patients receiving care in the hospital. This generous gift will help enhance care for NHRMC patients.
The grant to NHRMC was part of a total of $100,000 the Willie Stargell Foundation awarded for patient care, along with education grants awarded to UNCW School of Nursing and CFCC Nursing Program, to continue the fight against kidney disease. Another $60,000 has been set aside in a discretionary fund for COVID-19 relief, research, and to help with individuals who apply to the Foundation for financial assistance with medications and travel to and from medical facilities for renal specific care.
Funds for the Foundation are raised through the annual Willie Stargell Celebrity Invitational and from generous public and private donations. The invitational is held each November and includes a golf tournament and auction dinner. The 18th annual event is scheduled for November 6th-8th, 2020.
