Lynn Swann, former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver, among new celebrities to attend Willie Stargell Celebrity Invitational
(WILMINGTON, N.C.) One of the greatest wide receivers to ever play for the Pittsburgh Steelers is coming to Wilmington. Lynn Swann will be one of the new celebrities attending the 23rd annual Willie Stargell Celebrity Invitational November 7-9 at the Country Club of Landfall.
While Swann and Stargell played two different professional sports, they both shared something unique. Swann played his entire NFL career in Pittsburgh with the Steelers from 1974 to 1982. Stargell spent his entire MLB career from 1962 to 1982 with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Both men were inducted into the Hall of Fame in their respective sports.
“Willie Stargell has always been an All-Star on and off the Diamond,” Swann said. “He set examples of how to conduct yourself 24-7. As a young athlete, trying to transition to Pittsburgh and Pro Sports, Willie provided a positive path to follow.”
Swann is one of several new celebrities coming to the three-day event. Fred McGriff, a member of the National Baseball Hall of Fame is also coming to Wilmington. They will join returning celebrities including NBA great Travis Best, NFL star Ed “Too Tall” Jones, former professional tennis player Katrina Adams and MLB standout Steve Lyons.
Close to 50 celebrities will attend the invitational that raises money to help local people living with kidney disease. Stargell died from kidney failure in 2001. A year later, his widow, Margaret Stargell created the Willie Stargell Foundation.
While the event, which includes a black-tie gala and golf sells out every year, there are a few sponsorship opportunities still available. For more information on how to become a sponsor, click here.
