Golf Tournament
Every year, the annual Willie Stargell
Celebrity Golf Tournament is
held in Wilmington, North Carolina
at the Country Club of Landfall. It
is a weekend of laughter, exciting
events, and a golf tournament. The
event weekend raises money for a
worthy cause, all in honor and memory
of a wonderful human being…Willie Stargell.
The proceeds from the event support the Willie
Stargell Foundation, a private, non-profit volunteer organization
raising money for kidney disease research and the
treatment of individuals struggling with kidney disease.
Willie passed away on April 9, 2001 after a valiant fight
with kidney disease. His quiet courage and determination in
battling many illnesses as a result of this disease, was remarkable.
Every year since 2003, many committed individuals,
including former teammates and friends of Willie, come
together to celebrate his remarkable life while raising money
to help improve the quality of life for another person living
with kidney disease.
Willie’s legacy should and will be continued. While many
will remember him for his accomplishments on the field as an
outstanding baseball player, he would be pleased to know that
much is being done in his name to help people live with the
disease that ultimately claimed his life. Specifically, the root
of Willie’s kidney disease began with hypertension. Hypertension
and kidney disease can have devastating affects on
individuals and their families. Untreated, it can alter and end
lives. At only 61 years of age, it ended Willie’s life. Twenty
six million Americans have chronic kidney disease and
another twenty million more are at increased risk. Education,
early detection, and proper treatment can assist tremendously
in combating these numbers. The mission of the Willie
Stargell Foundation is achieved annually through the Willie
Stargell Celebrity Golf Tournament.
Each
year, the event is full of surprises and memories we carry with
us all year - just like the surprise appearance from Sister
Sledge at the auction dinner last year. We hope that you will
join us in support this sixth annual event, as we raise money
for a worthy cause and honor the memory of Willie Stargell.
Sincerely,

Margaret Weller-Stargell
