From Margaret Weller-Stargell
Approximately 26 million
Americans are living with
chronic kidney disease (CKD)
and millions of others are at
increased risk for the disease
due to complications with
CKD. Over the past eight
years, the Foundation, through
the Willie Stargell Celebrity
Golf Tournament, has raised
significant funds to support the
following: the National Kidney
Foundation, which raises
money for kidney disease and
renal failure research; UNCW
and Cape Fear Community
College Nursing Programs with
an emphasis on renal care;
and New Hanover Regional
Medical Center (NHRMC) for
the purpose of establishing
a state of the art dialysis
center. Additionally, in 2009
the Foundation was able to
provide upgrades for the dialysis
stations at NHRMC with stateof-
the-art technology to enhance
patient comfort and safety.
Willie passed away on April
9, 2001, after a valiant fight
with kidney disease. His quiet
courage and determination
in battling this disease,
was remarkable. Each year,
since 2003, many committed
individuals, including former
teammates and friends of Willie,
come together to celebrate his
remarkable life while raising
money to help improve the
quality of life for another person
living with kidney disease.
Willie would be so humbled and
proud to know that so much is
being done in his name through
the support of so many people
like you.
Sincerely,

Margaret Weller-Stargell
